Pity the man who tried to sell himself on eBay for 99p and failed to find a buyer. Steve Sewell, of Barrow-in-Furness, blames it on his age (58). But there’s a time in every life when the old business principle – buying people at their worth and selling them for what they think is their worth – strikes home. Anyway, selling yourself (short or long) is frowned upon by eBay authorities. Even selling your gallstones, which can be of no further use, is banned by their code of conduct, as Anita Crawley discovered earlier this month, just as she had secured a deal to sell 42 of her own (“like mint humbugs”) for 99p each. Other forbidden items on the website are knives (in the United Kingdom), witches’ spells (since 2012), explosives (sensibly) and your own soul. In the last case, buyers’ rights are being protected. But it might otherwise prove devilish awkward for the seller, too.

Seems like a decent deal: buy someone for 99p, make them give you £1!
