NEW YORK -Why is Netflix raising its prices? In part, because the company miscalculated how many people still want to receive DVDs by mail each month, a more expensive service to provide compared to its streamed Internet videos.

Netflix has been trying to lure subscribers away from its DVDs by offering cheaper plans that include movies and TV episodes delivered over its Internet streaming service. In November, it began offering a streaming-only plan for $8, its cheapest option at the time. Yet Netflix customers aren't flocking to Internet video as quickly as some analysts said the company expected.

Many consumers are unwilling to give up the trademark red envelopes. DVDs feature newer titles and the latest theatrical releases that aren't available through the company's streaming service.

So the company is adjusting its pricing to reflect the cost of its DVD business and to help bring in more money to cover growing expenses for streaming content.

Under the new plan, customers who want to rent DVDs by mail and watch video on the Internet will need to pay at least $16 per month. Netflix had been bundling both options in a single package for as low as $10 per month. But that bundled plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs, wrote Jessie Becker, Netflix Inc.'s vice president of marketing, on a company blog Tuesday.

Questions: Do any of you use Netflix? If so, do you prefer DVD's or the streaming service?

I like watching movies on my television, it has a bigger screen & I have surround sound. I rent movies the old fashioned way, going to the video store my self. Blockbuster is right down the street & they've dropped their prices to .99 cents a day per movie. So I rent a movie, watch it once or twice, bring it back the next day & it only cost me a dollar.

I also go to my local video store to rent movies. They run specials where you can rent two movies for the price of one. The most I paid to rent a new release was $1.99. I need a big screen when I watch movies and wouldn't like watching them on my small monitor.

Netflix is only available to Americans for both DVDs and streaming but Canadians can use the streaming portion of the service though. The main reason why people aren't ditching the DVDs for streaming only is because there is far too little that can be streamed that is any good.

You can stream Netflix to your TV if it is connected to either a Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, or a blu ray player that's designed to stream Netflix movies for no extra charge.

I have the service and it's worth it because there is so much I probably would never have seen if I didn't have Netflix. It really does pay for itself in the end which is why I like it and I don't really mind the price increase as it's not that bad for each person.

I don't use Netflix. We usually go to a normal renting store or the Redbox if we want to rent movies. I wouldn't mind having Netflix though, and I have a cord that I can hook into my laptop and plug into the TV so I could watch a movie online on the TV.

I use my older brothers account from time to time to watch stuff on Netflix.com whenever I want to watch something and I can't find it anywhere else, great stuff. But usually, I can find something somewhere else, that's what Netflix should never forget.
