I seem to be getting a lot of spam bots on my forums, I'll see them spam at least everyday and its when I'm sleeping that it happens. but I'll also get these people who just chill on my forums but haven't posted yet it shows they've spent like 18 hours on my forums, do you think those people are bots too? I think I have a idea of where these bots are coming from a top-list I use which is pretty inactive I'm not to sure how many people use it anymore. but like I'm getting a lot of people to join a day.. but I'm not sure if they are bots.. if only all these "bots" or people I'm not sure which they are would post.


so how to tell? I was thinking a message when done registering it would send you a message saying please reply back to this message so I know you aren't a bot?

I did add a plugin for when you register to stop most bots but that was just done yesterday, so i don't know if its working.

They usually have weird usernames and weird email addresses.

Do you have email verification to activate the account?

Are you using Captcha?

Do you look up their IP addresses?

Well I did have email verification but I just took that off.

and no I don't look up their Ip's. But yeah some of there names are weird but.. I don't know maybe its just some random name they like or I'e never seen? I don't know.

I'll tell you these spam bots are getting smarter and smarter. The only thing you can really do is just keep an eye on members you feel might be a bot. If they're not posting, then they really aren't doing any harm to the forum. If they start posting spam all all over, well then, get out your ban hammer!

Haha alright And I just took the email verification because I was seeing a lot of people 'not activated' which makes me think they could be a human and actually want to post but cant..because they didn't get the email :S So I took that off. I just don't like having a lot of members and none of them are really posting..
