this is just starting to pop from my indie sources on the ground in gaza so i have nothing to show you yet. it's unclear who broke the ceasefire after they had agreed to a 24 hour extension, but it's looking like one of the extremist rocketeer cells fired first.

hamas itself has fired few rockets between the end of operation pillar of cloud in 2012 and a few weeks into this current operation in retaliation for targeting their leaders in their homes with their families while they were breaking ramadan fast. hamas gets blamed for it, but the fact is they have no command control over islamic jihad or the smaller extremist cells.

for the record, from my vantage, the civilian authority is pretty impotent in their command authority over the al qassam brigade and completely hamstrung when it comes to commanding islamic jihad or the smaller cells which is where most of the rockets come from. also, the civilian authority has been doing well by the people and have a lot of support.

please do not assume that i am 'pro-hamas' when the fact is that i'm non-partisan and opposed to the warfare waged by both sides, though i admittedly have a special hard on for the zionists because i'm a real jew and not a fascist using perverted judaism as a cover for a colonial venture.

Israel says it has carried out a series of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip after three rockets fired by Palestinian militants hit the south of the country.

The latest round of violence meant a days-long truce, that had been extended on Monday night for another 24 hours, broke down.

The Israeli military said the rockets landed in open areas near the city of Beersheba. There were no reports of casualties.

The Israel Defence Forces said on Twitter: "Terrorists have violated the ceasefire."

And Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said: "This rocket attack on Beersheba is a grave and direction violation of the ceasefire."

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his military to strike Gaza "terror targets", according to an official.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the rocket attacks.

But shortly before the launch, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum hinted of more rocket fire, saying: "If Netanyahu doesn't understand ... the language of politics in Cairo, we know how to make him understand."

The extension to the five-day temporary truce had been agreed between Israel and Gaza's rulers Hamas and was due to expire at 10pm (UK time) on Tuesday night.

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli artillery fired two shells at agricultural land east of Khan Younis on Thursday afternoon, witnesses said, disrupting the calm of the first day of a five-day ceasefire that Palestinian factions have so far adhered to.

Eyewitnesses told Ma'an that Israeli artillery deployed near the al-Sareej site fired at an area east of Khan Younis.

No injuries were reported in the strike.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said she was not familiar with the incident.

Al Jazera has this headline:

Palestinian rocket fire, Israeli airstrikes shatter calm

Israel on Tuesday carried out a series of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip in response to renewed rocket fire from Palestinian militants — a burst of violence that broke a brief cease-fire and endangered negotiations in Egypt aimed at ending the monthlong conflict.
