Breech of Contract: Is it fair?

In some companies, they ask their employees a contract called non-compete agreement. It is how they protect their companies, which I think is not fair to their employees once they filed for a resignation.

What an employee does after he stops working somewhere is not any employer's business. He is free to start his own enterprise
