Peter Kinloch, 28, got into difficulties as he descended from the mountain last Wednesday.
A post on the website Everestnews.com described how he died at 8,600m after becoming temporarily blinded and suffering frostbite to two fingers in an area known as Mushroom Rock.
Although his team leader David OBrien and three sherpas battled for 12 hours to save him they were eventually forced to leave him and descend from the mountain.
Mr Kinloch's father, also called Peter, said: We can take comfort in that he achieved one of his lifetime ambitions. How many people can say they stood on top of the world?
Speaking from the Isle of Skye, in Scotland, where this son went to secondary school, Mr Kinloch added: Peter packed so much into 28 years.
He did in that time what many people fail to achieve in a lifetime. He used to go climbing mountains when he was a little boy. Being in the hills has been with him all his life.
Taking on the highest peaks always carries an element of risk and all mountaineers know that.
