Canadian authorities have banned the sale of British exports Marmite, Penguins, Irn-Bru and Ovaltine, deeming them a threat to their nation's health.

A shop in Saskatoon specialising in exported British food and drink for the ex-pat community faces possible closure after the ruling by Canadian food watchdogs.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) objected to food colourings, vitamins and minerals contained in the British products that are illegal in Canada.

Tony Badger, owner of the Brit Foods store, fears for his livelihood after CFIA officials pulled products from his shelves and impounded them.

One customer, Nigel Westwick, originally from Newcastle, commented: "For a country that allows one to buy firearms, guns and bullets, stopping a soft drink suitable for all ages seems a little ludicrous."
