The Child on the Poster

I wish you’d pay more interest

To that child who is dearly missed

Look at her, cute as a doll

The child on the poster hanging on the wall

Her face and beneath, a seven-digit number

But you don’t know how much stress her parents are under

Just another day shopping, a mother and her child

Halfway out the store she realizes something isn’t right

She looks around and her daughter isn’t in sight

Poor mother, she looks around and gets hysterical

She goes half-shaken to the store manager’s clerical

The manager calls out to every aisle on the store megaphone

Keep watch for the fiend who’d want to take little Jennifer home

Too bad, the store wasn’t safeguarded

Leaving the mother to go home broken-hearted

The lost child on the poster

No one knows why it happens but it does

The young are taken, the family is shaken

Nothing from then on will be like it was

The lost child on the poster

Mommy breaks the news to her husband, it cuts deep

He breaks down on the floor to weep

He posts pictures of his baby girl on the Internet

He calls the police and they issue a regional threat

Local law enforcement informs every local tenant

Taking any eye-witness descriptions of the menace

The crooked being that took Jenna from her parents

It’s a nightmare, a parent’s worst fear

No signs of Little Jenna anywhere

The Chief of Police is getting worried, the search intensified

And what’s worse, no suspects have been identified

Each day the family goes to church asking for grace

Knowing every lead brings them to a wild goose chase

They’re having trouble sleeping, wide-awake at nights

Their thoughts are full of worry and their dreams full of fright

The lost child on the poster

No one knows why it happens but it does

The young are taken, the family is shaken

Nothing from then on will be like it was

The lost child on the poster

Every time they lay their head to snore

They get dreams of the bad news hitting their front door

It seems justified; it’s beginning to get grim

Each passing day, the chances of finding her get slim

Losing hope, the father breaks down on his knees

His friends’ words of encouragement don’t help in the least

Not even counseling from the holy priest

Meanwhile, the media tracks the parents with questions to implore

I don’t even think they even know what the parents have to endure

Imagine soul shattering grief that makes you drop and cower

Imagine counting every second of every minute of every hour

Imagine keeping your finger on your phone’s dial

Then you would begin to understand losing your child

The young are taken, the family is shaken

Nothing from then on will be like it was

It’s beginning to turn into months and the parents lose hope

But somehow time helps them learn to cope

Then like a truck, it hits them; they get a call minutes later

As they pick up the phone, their anxiety becomes greater

The police found Jenna’s body wrapped in a plastic bag

The news kills them; the mother is ready to gag

They arrived at the police station, their child’s body to claim

What’s worse is they haven’t yet found the abductor, a darn shame…

This is the last time they’ll see her face

They give her a kiss and a strong embrace

They bury their daughter with teary eyes and no closure

Their little girl will always be another missing child on the poster
