China says committed to achieving denuclearization on Korean Peninsula

08:39, April 03, 2013

BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China is committed to achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula as well as maintaining its peace and stability, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui said Tuesday.

We don't want to see any warfare or chaos on the Peninsula. We oppose any side making provocative statement or doing anything that undermines peace and stability on the Peninsula and in the region, Zhang told Xinhua.

Zhang said China has been paying close attention to the tense situation on the Korean Peninsula over the recent period of time, as the development of the situation is closely related to the stability of China's neighboring countries.

I'm not sure I believe them.

You?

Sure I do.

They don't want either of the Koreas to have anything nuclear, not exactly surprising. And I'm sure they want peace after annexing said peninsula.

Analysis from Reuters:

...

Beijing will likely never risk a scenario that could prompt waves of North Koreans to flee across the border and at the same time leave nuclear material unsupervised.

China is coming to the conclusion that North Korea is becoming a liability and it needs to take steps to deal with it, said Paul Haenle, former China director on the U.S. National Security Council and White House representative to stalled six-party talks aimed at getting Pyongyang to end its nuclear activities.
