Here it comes, that great expanse so awesome that the prefix in isn't capable of describing it enough. Comcast users, soon enough your Internet and cable TV service will be known as Xfinity.

Has a nice ring to it, right? Almost makes me want to take a swig of Mountain Dew while watching some snowboarding videos on the Web.

So what does it mean for you? The name change will rebrand mostly the same services, though the company will soon start rolling out an option to let customers watch TV channels through the Web. And next time you see your cable guy roll up, his truck will have a fancy new sticker on the side.

The change has been speculated to be an attempt by Comcast, the largest cable provider in the country, to win back the favor of its customers.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

This re-branding comes as Comcast has struggled to rebuild its reputation because of poor service and problems with its network that resulted in telephone and Internet outages. Its customer-satisfaction rating is among the lowest in the industry, but it has improved slightly in the last year.
In the same article, a spokesperson denies they they are distancing themselves from the Comcast brand.

William Lozito, president of Strategic Name Development, a brand naming company noticed that numerous users on twitter were mocking the new name. They drew up a questionnaire and conducted a survey, revealing some interesting results.

Lozito said 70 percent of users did not think that Xfinity is a good brand name for a cable service. Instead, 38 percent selected it as a good name for a gaming console, 16 percent thought it could be a porn site and another 16 percent thought it was a good name for condoms.

Their study also revealed that 56 percent of those who responded did not think the different name would change their perception of Comcast's services.

What this says on the surface is that most people aren't connecting with what the company does, Lozito said. Most people are agreeing strongly that the name is dated.

Tell us what you think.
