(CBS News) Martha Stewart went to jail for it. Hedge fund honcho Raj Rajaratnam was fined $92 million and will go to jail for years for it. But members of Congress can do the same thing -use non-public information to make stock trades -- and there's no law against it. Steve Kroft reports on how America's lawmakers can legally make tidy profits on information only they know, simply because they won't pass a law against themselves.

perhaps this is in the wrong thread. There is no debate about this, they are.

It also isn't 'news'.

Maybe this topic should be in the life section.

Shocker.

Congress has become a playground for men to make money for themselves
I'd just like to point out that it's been like that from the start. (The real start.) The Romans did it, their electees didn't get paid for the job. Hence only wealthy people wanted to be elected (they could pay the initial loss they'd run) and did their best to make sure they'd make more money afterwards.

As I recall anyway.

The same goes for the Princes of the Church. If you look through the history of the Cardinals, most came from wealthy and powerful Italian families for the first couple of thousand years or so. Once appointed, they steered various contracts and appointments to their kin for fun and profit.

So we have two fine examples of why it is generally a bad idea.

Now what?

Well, some do say that America is really the second coming of the Roman Empire, and every one knows how corrupt the first run was...
They got stuff done, though.

Conquered most of the known world, build a helluva lot of roads, constructed not one, but two walls between England and Scotland, they spread their language and writing to just about everything, introduced horses to some parts of Europe, build monuments that still stand today...

Of course in the end they just got sacked by... pretty much everyone.

What do you think of them even refusing to vote on making it illegal for them to benefit from buying or selling stocks involved in legislation that will result in their own profit from the deal.

It is called insider trading, and Martha Stewart went to jail for it, but it is OK for Congress.

It just goes to show they only give a damn about themselves. And don't want to look out for the Little Man. I love that Dr. Suess like quote.

Democrats are anti-American? Now that's interesting.

As bad as congress is, wall street is far worse. In congress at least you have (or have had) a few good apples like Ron Wyden, Russ Feingold etc.

Are you putting words in peoples mouths again?

First reply, I'm guessing you didn't bother to read (not surprising considering the nature of your accusations against me, I wouldn't be surprised if you failed to read my entire posts as well).

I've read her post, and I read the entire posts of yours as well, my apologies, but what she said has some truth in it...

Truth? Really? Can you elaborate?

[quote name='+Mr. Jazzy' timestamp='1324624599' post='269058]What accusations? I was merely asking you a question...

Accusing me of putting words in other people's mouths.

There is a slight difference, but in a debate or discussion scenario, asking unfounded questions like that can have the same effect as actually making an accusation. By asking you are suggesting.

Ever wonder why we elect rich people ?

I mean do they really care where their next meal comes from?

Should be mandatory that at least one poor guy gets into office, heck he might even give out his cell number so we could call him up with OUR problems.
