I think when Off Topix switched to MyBB, it was the best thing ever! This software is user and staff friendly. It's got a sleek and sexy look too! 
I have, however, seen other forums that switch software way to often. It's like they get bored and just shut down the site for a few months and then come back with a new software. I've seen one site do this at least 5 times now. In my opinion, that's a great way to lose members and credibility.

All of our conversions were necessary, at least to me 
The most recent one was to help out my struggling wallet. No more paying for software licence renewals every few months with MyBB. 
I seen a forum recently shut down and restart the entire forum from zero on a new software, that's a great way to lose credibility. At least when you convert, everything is still there.
