Creating Hype before site open..

Did you ever create hype before opening a site? Was it for a personal site, forum, blog exc.. If you did do this how did it ending up working for you? Also what did you do to do this. Do you create a newsletter, personal message, exc..

I have not tried that. It makes sense though just like restaurants and how they have soft openings ...and re-openings under new management sometimes.

Not many forums can keep any hype going, it's just best to say a new place is opening.

I've seen a few forums do it and honestly, if done correctly, it can be quite fun to keep tabs on them. The best strategy is to create a coming soon page with an email subscription form. Providing a few screenshots of the site to give users a sort of sneak peak can work well too.

I like the concept but I did not do that with my forums and I'm not sure it would have helped. Not unless I had a lot of money to throw around on advertising for the hype.
