A violent stunt is growing in popularity among teenagers. The so-called "knockout game" involves assaulting people without warning, and it is claiming lives.

The victims of the brutal game are chosen at random. Defenseless and unsuspecting people are attacked by groups of teens who have one goal in mind: to knock the victim out with one punch.

"One-hitter quitter," "knock em' and drop em," "point em' out and knock 'em out" are all names for a disturbing trend now drawing concern nationwide.

In Pittsburgh, a teacher was punched so hard he collapsed head first into the concrete curb. A man in Brooklyn was also knocked unconscious. And even women are being attacked.

There have been seven recent cases in New York City alone. And the game has turned fatal in at least four documented attacks -- in Syracuse, N.Y.; St. Louis; Chicago; and Hoboken, N.J., site of the latest fatal attack.

Boys -- seen in video from a security camera after the incident -- have been charged with the murder. They are just 13 and 14 years old.

He says there's no real pattern to the way the attackers choose their victims, but they are always alone, and they stand out.

"The victims are someone who the young people consider to be an 'other,'" Butts explained. "That could be a racial difference, it could be a religious difference, it could be an age difference, it just could be a class difference."

Nothing in the so-called "knockout game," is about a fair fight. So if it's not about toughness, if it's not about courage, then what is it about?

Butts said, "Teenagers get involved in this game to prove their manhood.

One day they're going to try this on the wrong person and get shot.

What are your thoughts?

Ahh, you don't understand that a criminal's rights are guaranteed by the court.

They cannot be "roughed up" because then you are violating their civil rights.

You, as a law abiding citizen have the right to walk down the street and then to be a victim when one of them picks you.

Well, I wouldn't hurt them badly but rough them up enough to teach them a lesson,

Well seeing as your an adult and they are considered children (a minor), that might not go over too well for you legally.

Not sure what I'd do :|

So... who's raising these kids?

Let's just hope it happens to enough of them to make them stop.

New York chef suffers broken jaw, nose in likely 'knockout game' attack in Philadelphia

November 28, 2013,
Police are investigating a vicious attack on a Manhattan chef who was walking alone on Tuesday night when he was allegedly assaulted by a group of six to eight men, all between the ages of 16 and 21. ‘I'm not well, a lot of swelling and overall pain,’ said victim Diego Moya. ‘Should be four weeks until I lose the wires and can eat normally, which is devastating being a chef. Means I can't work.’

HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -
Nov 27, 2013

A Hamden High School student has become a victim of a brutal trend known as the "knockout game."

A male senior was walking in the halls of Hamden High School on Friday when police said a student "ran toward him and punched him under the eye."

Because of the assault, the senior suffered an eye injury. The victim's injuries are not life-threatening.

The senior told police that he did not know who had hit him and never talked with him. However, a short time later, the high school resource officer located the alleged suspect.

He told the high school resource officer "it's a game he and his friends play."

The 15-year-old student was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. He is expected to appear in juvenile court in New Haven on Dec. 9.

New York Teen Arrested In Connection With Videotaped "Knockout Game" Attack On Elderly Woman

An upstate New York teenager was arrested yesterday in connection with an online video showing him punching an elderly woman in the head as she exits a Rochester convenience store.

Devin Alexander, 16, was busted Wednesday on a probation violation charge, according to a Rochester Police Department spokesperson (who declined to reveal how Alexander, who was on probation for a robbery conviction, allegedly violated terms of his supervision). The teenager is currently in custody.

Alexander, pictured at right, is seen in a video that was first posted to a Facebook page titled “True Goon Tocool Sneekey.” The clip, which was publicized by Rochester blogger/activist Davy Vara, shows Alexander outside the store telling a giggling cameraman that he was going to “smack the old lady with the snowball when she come out the store.”

But when the woman emerged from the business, Alexander instead threw a roundhouse left that struck the woman--whose back was to the teenager--in the head. The assault so delighted the man filming the crime that he screamed “Smack cam!” five times.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Kyle Rogers woke up in an ambulance Sunday morning, completely unaware of the random attack that put him there.

The 23-year-old man and his parents then investigated, eventually tracking down surveillance video showing a man running up to Rogers and sucker-punching him before walking off.

Rogers, who broke his jaw and suffered facial lacerations, told CBS 2′s Jessica Schneider he’s positive he was a victim of a “knockout game” attack.
