Deleting Inactive Members

It's important to have an accurate member account. When people visit your site, one of the first thing they may look at are statistics. You want to make sure the member statistics are statistics that are correct.

I delete accounts once a year, because having inactive member accounts falsifies the forum. If I see a member count at 100, I want to see at least 90 of those 100 members to be posting, or at least posted once.

I personally wouldn't delete any accounts because you never know when they might come back. If they do come back to find their account was deleted because they werent active enough, chances are they will feel insulted and unwelcome. You probably just lost out on a potential re-active member. Also they may turn around and tell their friends about the treatment they received at your board. A lot of forums rely on word-of-mouth referrals.. Seems like a pointless thing to do that causes more harm that it does good.

Well if they hadn't visited in a full year after their registration date, what are the chances they'll visit again? And they haven't posted not even once.

If this member was an active member, with a nice amount of posts, etc, and left on a leave, then their account will be left untouched.

I purge accounts with post count at 0. If they are active lurkers and I notice them reading content, I may not purge their account.

But I find it highly rare that people lurk for a year and never add to a discussion.

Well most of the inactive members are simply bots. They register and tries to spam the forum after some time. The best spammer out here is xrumer. I also use it sometime

It costs nearly 500 bucks but worth every penny!

That's how I feel as well. When I had a forum, I never deleted accounts, because like you said, who knows if they will want to come back and post one day? As was also said, the only Ban On Sight are bots.

Bad move, don't do it. A statistic is a variable; I'd be more concerned about members returning to only find out that their account had been deleted. Don't count on them re-registering, because odds are they won't.

I only delete spam bot accounts that have made spam topics proving they are a bot. I don't delete anything else because the fact is that there is a potential they might return and since no one can say none of those inactive accounts has a prayer of ever becoming active suggests it's not worth it to risk losing what might be a potential active member someday.

Then again, the stats at the bottom of Rapture aren't visible so I don't have to worry about stats which they can not see anyways. XD

Some people like me don't visit sites for a long, but then we come back and start posting.

I think you should just leave them be, no point deleting them when they could come back, plus, i feel when you see posts from guest it looks bad.

i think i was deleted on a forum becuase i was gone for maybe two months. i went there when i could and there was nothing there on my existence it was like i was never there. i emailed them saying that i couldn't go on thier forum at the time, i haven't gotten a response. so i just forgot about them, if they can't handle me then i don't need them.

i personally think it's wrong to delete members for being inactive, unless they have never posted.
