What would you put first: hygiene or blue jeans?

For lovers of raw denim who often wear the same pair of pants for six months or more between washes, the answer is obvious.

In a fashion world where high-end blue jeans are often sold faded, ripped and distressed, a group of die-hard denim fans has taken to weathering their jeans the old-fashioned way -- by wearing them nonstop and washing them rarely.

Not only are they saving quarters at the laundromat, but raw denim lovers say they're also developing a more personalized garment molded to their bodies through months of blood, sweat and tears (rips, that is).

You wear the raw denim in, as much as you can, so that it starts taking on your body shape, said Darryl de Necker, who wore his first pair daily for six months without washing them.

For so-called denim heads, breaking in a pair of jeans is a serious process.

First comes the hunt for the right pair of raw denim jeans. A number of manufacturers produce raw denim pants, like Levi's 501 ($37), A.P.C.'s New Standard ($165), Nudie Jeans' Average Nebulous Dry Selvage ($249) and Jean Shop's Indigo Classic ($260).

Then comes months of constant wear. Some raw denim buyers even sleep in their jeans.
