I have developed the ability to do this.
Every Thursday night at the church, we have a "music and meal ministry", I spend all day, pretty much alone, fixing the main course and at least one side dish from scratch, and then putting together a salad or whatever.
Then about two thirty I get the sound system turned on and warmed up. The musicians and others begin to arrive around 3.
The music starts at 4. They play 'old' country, and gospel, and some other stuff. It's usually not bad. The youngest member of the band is just over 50, the oldest is 94.
I sit near the sound system, making sure there is no feedback and when somebody is singing everywhere BUT into the mic that we can still hear them.
And, in a room with, well, this last Thursday, 47 other people....
I WAS ALONE.
I had my laptop and was doing the HTML for a new web page.
And then about quarter after five I went and put the food on the serving line and then went back to my place. During the meal, I play a selection of classic rock and 'clean' country. And I'm still alone.
Most of them have learned, they can come over and talk, but I may not respond, or, in reality, even hear them.
I can be ALONE in a crowded room with a live band.
