When I say the first book, I don't mean the book that you were supposed to read in your school. When I ask about the first book you read, I am trying to know about the book you read that was not part of your school curriculum. Well, I remember the first book I read. It was a small picture book with a story from Panchantantra, a Hindu book of fables. The story was about how a rat was able to become a tiger and how he was turned back into a rat by the sage.

I think the first book I read "voluntarily" apart from school for entertainment was either Tai Pan or Shōgun; both novels by James Clavel.

Probably the very hungry caterpillar.
