A dog has been pulled from the rubble of an apartment destroyed by a tornado after its ears were spotted sticking up from the debris.
Owner Jacob Montgomery said he experienced "crazy relief" when Dexter was discovered alive nine days after tornado in Washington, Illinois.
"Apparently he waited in the apartment for nine days. I don't know how or why he did that, but he just did," he told the Sun Times newspaper.
The building's roof and walls had been blown away by the tornado on November 17.
The six-month-old pit bull was found on the floor near the spot where the kitchen sink had ended up.
The dog "was emaciated," said Randy Wheat, head of the group Rescuing Animals in Need of Central Illinois which found him.
"You could see his ribs. That said, he checked out OK. He had nothing to eat and drink except snow," he said.
He said one of his volunteers spotted the dog when he "saw his ears sticking up".
Mr Montgomery, a member of the Illinois National Guard, was not at home at the time of the tornado.
He said when he was reunited with Dexter as soon as the dog saw him "his tail started going".
Sarah Ripper, from the clinic that treated Dexter, told Sky News: "He's doing good. He's getting back into a normal routine.
