A Rottweiler mix whose puppies died shortly after she gave birth has a new chance at being a mother, thanks to some Oklahoma tornado puppies who lost their mother.
Bertha, 2, was about to be euthanized at a South Bend, Ind. shelter when Second Chance 4 Pets Network volunteer rescued her, according to The Times in Munster. She was pregnant at the time and needed to have an emergency caesarean section. Unfortunately, none of her eight puppies survived. Second Chance 4 Pets Network put a notice up on its Facebook page that the group had a lactating mother without puppies in case anyone needed help.
Meanwhile, Jeanne Sommer, director of Lakeshore PAWS in Valparaiso, Indiana, told CBS affiliate WBST in South Bend, Ind. that a volunteer had arrived at a shelter where six puppies from the Oklahoma tornado were staying. She found out they were planning on putting them down because they didn't have any room in the facility, and their pit bull/shepherd mix mother had already been euthanized for being too aggressive. The volunteer called Lakeshore PAWS, and they picked up the puppies.
While they were bottle feeding the puppies every two hours, Lakeshore PAWS put an appeal on Facebook for a dog mother. Someone who had seen Bertha's ad put the two organizations together, and they decided to see if Bertha would raise the six puppies on her own.
"She was unsure at first, but the foster got into the pool with her and she started cleaning them right away," JoAnn Palko, president and founder of Second Chance 4 Pets Network, told The Times.
The foster mother told Palko that Bertha doesn't want to leave the puppies alone, even when she has to go to the bathroom. Second Chance is now considering training Bertha to be a therapy dog.
