A bodyboarder has escaped with cuts and bruises after being saved by a lifeguard from eight-foot waves crashing on the rocky coast of Cornwall.

The footage captures the moment a bodyboarder is saved from massive waves after crashing into the rocks at Porthtowan beach near Truro.

The lifeguard's rescue board can be seen being tossed about in the sea as he tries to save the stranded man in high winds.

The pair are eventually able to reach safety by scrambling on to rocks. The surfer only suffered minor injuries.

The incident has prompted The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) to warn surfers in Cornwall and Devon to stay out of the sea for the next few days as the remains of Hurricane Katia causes large storm swells.

The public have also been encouraged to stay away from piers, sea walls and rocks which could be affected by the stormy seas.
