Those wishing to emulate the Duchess of Cambridge's pared-back, chic style stitch for stitch, need to be prepared to pay for it. Even though her love for the British high street often means her sartorial pickings are within the reach of most normal folk, copycats could end up paying up to three and a half times the original price to get her royal look.

Kate Middleton wears Reiss to meet Michelle Obama

Take the camel-cloured, £175 'Shola' dress by retailer Reiss, which Kate wore to meet the Obamas at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. Within a few hours of observers identifying the dress, Reiss reported that the item had sold out online, and demand had caused their website to crash.

So with a shortage of Shola's, the only place left to try is eBay , where owners are cashing in on the demand for the dress.

eBay sellers offering an immediate sale - i.e without going through the auction process, have slapped a £600 price on unworn Shola's with the tags intact.

Of the sixty nine dresses currently available on eBay - in various sizes and also including a bright blue colourway - the cheapest at the time of going to press was £50, with two days left at auction.
