Sony's announcements at E3 focused on exclusive titles for the PS3, as well as revealing that the Next Generation Portable (NGP) will be called PlayStation Vita.
Like Microsoft before them, Sony wanted to reignite interest in their motion controller. The PlayStation Move hasnââ¬â¢t yet fulfilled its potential. Demos of NBA 2k12 (with the added star power of LA Lakers player Kobe Bryant taking to the stage) and cute adventure Medieval Moves Deadmundââ¬â¢s Quest were decent enough, but didnââ¬â¢t particularly spark the enthusiasm the Move needs.
The exclusives kept coming though, with the Firefly-esque third-person shooter Starhawk and the return of platform hero Sly Cooper receiving decent trailers. Though disappointingly no gameplay for either. And then there was Dust 514, a sci-fi FPS from the developers of hugely popular PC MMO Eve Online. Dust 514 will be exclusive to PS3 with added Move support, but will have cross platform interaction with Eve Online. The gameplay we saw was familiar FPS fare, but how the game will interact with Eve was the real interest.
While front loaded with exclusives, Sony also wanted to showcase third party games. Bioshock Infinite was their impressive coup, with the announcement the game will feature Move on PS3, and a version of BioShock coming to upcoming handheld Next Generation Portable (NGP).
Ah yes, NGP. The first shiny new hardware of E3. After being revealed earlier this year, it was time to give the new baby a name. Kazuo Hirai revealed Sonyââ¬â¢s successor to the PSP will be called PlayStation Vita. We already knew the new console would be a technical monster, and a gameplay demo for Uncharted Golden Abyss was the ideal showcase of its capabilities. Nathan Drake certainly is keeping busy.
Impressively, dungeon crawling RPG Ruin allows you to save your game on Vita before moving onto the PlayStation 3 and continuing your game in the living room. This cloud-based save system is a fascinating feature, and the hope is more games will take advantage of this cross-platform interaction between Vita and the PS3. Wipeout 2048, for instance, will allow Vita and PS3 players to compete against each other in online races. LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers also impressed with its touch based creative spark, utilising the Vitaââ¬â¢s unique capabilities.
Yoshinori Ono of Capcom, meanwhile, will take some beating for the best shirt of E3, showing off Street Fighter X Tekken for Vita in a fabulous stripy number.
Finally, Hirai announced the Vitaââ¬â¢s pricing model. The wi-fi only version will retail at $249.99, while the 3G enabled version will be a little more expensive at $299.99. There was worry that Vita would be too expensive due to its high end components, but the sub ã300 price point will been seen as an attractive proposition for what the console offers.
