The Mercury Prize-winning band from Bury said they were dead chuffed to be commissioned by the BBC to produce an uplifting soundtrack for the Games.

The tune will become one of the most familiar sounds of 2012, accompanying the Corporation’s coverage from the beginning of the torch relay on May 19 to September 9, when the Paralympic Games end.

Guy Garvey’s distinctive vocals will not appear on the six-minute track, which is titled First Steps. Instead, he has written an arrangement for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Community Gospel Choir.

Garvey said the band members were “dead proud to be doing it”, although he joked: “It’s strange as well, none of us really being athletic.”

“We’re over the moon. We’ve been working on it very secretively in Salford [the BBC’s northern base] and it’s sounding very good,” he told BBC 6 Music.
