The family of a US man who drowned after being sucked into a hotel spa is suing a Bahamian resort, alleging that he drowned while workers at the resort ignored his fiancee’s pleas for help.

Missouri man John Van Hoy Jr, 33, died on 28 December, 2010 after he was sucked into the drain of the hotel's whirlpool while he and his fiancée Nicole Cleaveland were holidaying in Nassau, reports the Courthouse News Service.

A lawsuit filed in Florida against the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort and the spa's manufacturers said the father-of-two became stuck after dunking his body below the surface.

Although he was 33 years old, in excellent shape, and could bench press over 300 pounds, the suction force was so excessive, John Van Hoy Jr could not free himself, the lawsuit reads.

Unless he dunked himself head first, this story makes no sense. I believe he was either drunk or had taken drugs and this was an accidental death. Wonder if they did a Toxicology work up on him.

I've heard of this happening to little kids, but never a grown ass man. This scares me. Why even have a pump that strong...? Although you could be right and he could have been drunk or on drugs. Who knows...
