The 7ft porbeagle took hold of Hamish Currie's boot after his crew had managed to haul the animal onto the deck of their vessel.

Fortunately for the 53-year-old fisherman, he had been wearing steel toe-capped boots which protected him from any serious damage from the shark's razor sharp teeth, although his shoe was left in shreds.

He managed to free himself from the creature's jaws with the help of one of his crew.

The skipper targeted the shark after hearing reports of it attacking seals off Islay in the Inner Hebrides.

Mr Currie said: A friend got in touch to tell me about the shark because I specialise in that style of fishing.

I took a crew of three up there to look for it because it had been attacking seals in the area.

Mr Currie, from Saltcoats, Ayrshire, tried to hook the porbeagle after the crew tracked it down on Wednesday.

They aimed to tag the fish, which is a member of the Great White family, and release it back into the water as usual.

However, the angry predator gnawed a hole in the crew's boat, and thrashed around as it was pulled on-board.

This one was a bad, bad fish, Mr Currie said.

He was nasty and got me by the foot. Luckily I was wearing steel toe-capped boots.

I just couldn't shake him off, but eventually one of my crew managed to help me free.

It was quite terrifying.

Mr Currie, who has vast experience of catching sharks, said this was his closest call to date.

I was very lucky this time. It has definitely made me a little bit more wary of them.

Sounds like the sorta thing sharks do in movies o.O

This makes no sense to me. They went there because the shark was attacking seals in the area. Then they say they were going to tag it and release it back into the water. What was tagging it going to do? Make it stop attacking seals? This is what humans get for interfering in something they have no right to interfere in. It's nature and and let nature take its own course.

It's quite a strange story, yes. Maybe they just wanted to tag it after hearing it was there
