Fizzy drinks tax needed - doctors

Yes, just what we need... more money going into the hands of the government because they are oh so good at spending it on the right things that the common man needs.

We hardly need any more taxes and bankrupting people just because of their weight is absurd as I wouldn't be surprised that some overweight people aren't well off financially.

Losing weight is not exactly easy for everyone and for some their body makes it very easy to gain and difficult to lose while some have it the other way around.

yes, but how much is the issue of obesity costing the system?

If it is costing the system millions in medical issues, then why shouldn't those who are responsible then be made to pay for it?

Why should I pay more in either taxes or on the food and drinks that I enjoy when I do not have a weight issue?

The reason it costs so much is medical care is overpriced by design in the US. I for one do not wish to pay any tax nor have anyone pay any tax due to the fact they are overweight. Why should a government be rewarded for the bad behavior of another? We already tried that with cigarettes and it just gets wasted like all money that gets handed to government does.

Do you really think taxing people is going to change them? You cannot simply throw a tax out and think it's going to change people. Habits are very hard to break whether it be drugs, alcohol, cigarettes or simply overeating. No one goes out of their way to be overweight on purpose. If you want to do something then help people beat their addictions and not turn them into a cash cow for the government. Of course there is no money to be made out of fixing problems only treating them because a person without a problem to be fixed is a person that doesn't generate money.

yes I do, because right now there is no consequence and everybody blames everyone and everything for their problems.

Make people responsible for their own health, then put a system in place to support them.

I think they are plenty of consequences already to not eating properly. If there was truly no consequences to the act of overeating then it would not be a problem. Whether they want to admit them is one thing but they do exist regardless if you admit to them or not.

Everyone gets sick eventually and dies regardless to how well they eat. They can delay it through eating right and not partaking in drugs, cigarettes, and excessive alcohol but no one can prevent it. Why someone should be punished for having bad eating habits at the core of how they end up sick and eventually dead while other ways of getting sick and passing get a free pass is beyond me.
