Flame War!

Sometimes members on forums get into disagreements and petty arguments and it can turn ugly! Personal attacks and mean spirited posts are all over the place! Sometimes several members get involved and locking topics wont matter because the drama will spill into any other random topic on the board.

How would you handle this situation?
Have you ever seen it happen?

I've seen this on two forums I was a member of. It was quite entertaining as long as it didn't involve me. I just ignored the members that were involved in it and minded my own business.
One of the forums has since closed. The other is still active and these flame wars are still going on. I stopped going there, not because of the flame wars but because no one was making any new topics. Got bored to death and left. To this day, when I need a good laugh, I will visit that forum as a guest.

Oh, I just hate them (and recently just got out of one).
I ban any member who intentionally flames (meaning trolls) another at my site.

I've seen it happen if they continued to argue I'd tell them to take it to the Pm's and if they don't i'd take their posting privilege away for a bit until they decide to stop argueing.

So you'd let your members harass and attack each other openly for your own entertainment then put a stop to it whenever you decide your bored?
How would you word that in your Forum Rules page?

Everything is allowed but don't overdo it. Use common sense.

Aren't everyone's definitions of "over-doing it" and "common sense" different and subject to interpretation? How would you enforce rules on someone who is breaking the rules when they think they are staying within your guidelines?

Luckily I have no ambition to start a forum.

I got in a flame war myself on a board which now closed his doors.
It went as far as him sending me a PM telling me he had a gun and he was going to kill me.
Just made me laugh.....

Well it was actually about a graphic request I did for him,but after editing it five times I told him I was done with it since I did it for free.
Then he started with PMing me all nonsense,yeah right I would be intimated by a fifteen year old

Weird, people take internet stuff so seriously sometimes. But then again people are really petty in real life too.
