A cyclist died after accidentally shooting himself on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Troy Earl Smith Jr., 25, was found lying on a street in St. Petersburg, Florida, with a gunshot wound to the chest. He later was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

After reviewing video from nearby businesses and talking to witnesses, detectives determined that Smith was riding his bike when the handgun he was carrying in his jacket pocket discharged.

Thoughts? :|

Another case of irresponsible gun ownership. Sad, but really an unnecessary and totally preventable death.

I'd like to know how he got a gunshot wound to the chest when the handgun he was carrying was in his jacket pocket. The handgun barrel would have been pointing down while in his pocket. If anything, I could see how he could accidentally have shot himself in the leg but not in the chest. Something does not smell right about this to me.

I agree it is a little wierd. I carry a bag on me that goes on the front of my chest when I am riding a bike while I am following the wife for her running training she does. And there is no way it could hit my chest. More like my arm or Leg. People train to use there firearms but there needs To be more on gun carry safety.

But I am sure if we ban them no violence will ever happen again.

A cyclist accidentally shot and killed himself as he was riding his bike, police have said. The 25-year-old was found on the road shortly after 1pm.

After reviewing video from nearby businesses and talking to witnesses detectives said they believe Smith was riding his bike when a handgun he was carrying in his jacket pocket went off.

The bullet hit him in the chest. Police said they found the gun and it appears as though it had discharged through his clothing.

I don't know but it sounds to me like he not on his bike and he committed suicide. Again, there is no way a gun in a jacket pocket is going to shoot you in the chest.

That's weird.Why wasn't the safety on?

Because of two reasons. First many guns like this one don’t have a safety on them. And many gun owners dont want the safety on them so manufacturers give you a choice.

So sad to see things like this if I am honest. It's irresponsible at best and only ends up with someone losing their life just like this guy. What I don't understand to be honest is why he felt the need to be carrying one in the first place? Saying that though nowadays it seems like a common thing.

It is a dangerous world. And some like me feel You need to use your right or lose it. Our family carries like a cigarette smoker doesn't leave home without a lighter.
