Growing up, I went to a school where the teachers assumed that the reading culture is low and that kids should be forced to read. There are times that anyone that didn't read a particular chapter of a book is punished. Have you been in a situation where you were forced to read?

I never really considered it anymore 'forced' than any other kind of schoolwork.

Honestly not a bad idea these days because with all the other distractions, kids quite often would probably never choose to read.

If they didn't force kids in school to read then most of them wouldn't learn. Reading is a major necessity. My son fought hard not to learn how to read but I made him do it anyway because letting him not learn it was going to hurt him down the road.

Any worthwhile teacher will know how to make reading FUN for little kids. But yeah, as kids move up in the grades & time reading is required for homework assignments, then the average kid (some exceptions) will ALWAYS have something on their mind that they'd rather be doing.
If a kid is lacking in enthusiasm and will not 'force' themselves to get their assignments completed......some kind of pressure/FORCE needs to be applied.

If I remember correctly, @Henrywrites was fortunate enough to have a father who instilled a pure love for reading in his kids at a very early age; so maybe forcing was not necessary in his case. 💗

Not forced. Part of the curriculum. In my case, the more you read the more points you got for rewards plus I enjoy reading the books especially Nancy Drew. These days I have an appreciation for it. I love a good book.
