It's all too easy to leave behind the odd personal item on holiday.

But a British couple took forgetfulness to new heights - and lost their 12-year-old son.

They stopped at a service station in Switzerland, filled up with petrol, and drove off - believing the boy was asleep in the caravan being towed behind their car.

But after another 20 minutes on the road last Saturday morning they pulled over to check on him and found he had vanished.

The unnamed couple came off the A2 motorway near Arisdorf and doubled back, but took a wrong turn at a junction and ended up in the centre of the city of Basel.

After taking directions from police they finally made it back to the Pratteln service station two hours later, where they found their son being looked after by staff.

A service station worker told Switzerland's Le Matin newspaper: 'The child told us that while his parents were filling up with petrol, he got out of the caravan and went to look round the shop.

'But when he came back, his mum and dad had vanished.

'He was very calm about it all, saying his parents were often forgetful and that he was sure they'd be back to get him soon.'

The story might remind some of the film Home Alone, where Macaulay Culkin plays an eight-year-old boy left behind when his family fly to Paris for a holiday.

Beyond forgetful in my opinion. When they stopped at the service station and were ready to leave, why the heck didn't they make sure the boy was okay. Thank goodness they looked after 20 minutes on the road. They were lucky because something bad could have happened to that 12 year old. He could have been kidnapped or even worse

I didn't think it was safe, nor desirable to carry a passenger in a caravan that's being towed.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal in the UK.

Reminds me of when my grandma left me a house while we were garage sailing when I was a kid.

Aww...How much was she hoping to get for you?
