Have you learned anything from being a regular forum user?

What has forum life taught you?

That you can meet nice, cool people, but also others who are not so nice or understanding. However, this is just about life in general. On forums it's a little different, because sometimes these people have an unwarranted authority over you just because their username is a different color. It's not like having a boss or a supervisor as they're not getting paid to work the forum (typically), but there are a lot of people out there ready and willing to abuse that power.

Oh, and also forums are like high school. You don't mess with the popular kids who've been around town the longest or else you'll get a foot up your newb ass. Really not so different than when I was in K-12!

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one!

Anyway, there isn't much of a difference between the real world and the forum world, except the fact that you have to talk everything out on a forum (because that's all you CAN do). Talking things out and getting to the root of a problem is very important. Hopefully being on forums all this time has helped me be able to ask the right questions, communicate more effectively and express how I feel accurately in real world interactions.

Exactly, Nebulous. I've come to realize in my experience on forums, that it's much better to approach situations without heated emotions and false assumptions and just TALK. Get to understand where the other person is coming from, and then try to come to an understanding. This doesn't happen much because we're hiding behind computer screens. Words can be exchanged that don't get the same reaction they would if they were spoken to someone's face. As a member of a forum or any other site, many people feel they have more confidence and less inhibition to speak their minds with the protection of an anonymous identity.

Guaranteed a number of the 'confrontations' I've experienced on the internet and on forums would never have taken place if we were standing in front of one another, which is sad because it just seems kind of pointless to hide behind the facade of a username.

Forums are great for information, finding out who knows what, and seeing who you can talk to, and who's a fucking troll to ignore.

Forums are what started my journey to coding, so I guess you can say they taught me how to code.

You can meet nice and chill people on them, but also meet the complete opposite. Sometimes it's best to leave a forum where you are not having fun on it or deal with drama. Forums is what got me into talking to people online besides chat rooms.

Reopening this forum and reconnecting with everyone taught me that certain people will drop you in an instant if you do something they don't agree with, which means they were never really a true friend to begin with.
