This would be an astounding piece of technology and hopefully if it's realized it will be kept an honest and open medium for information sharing. I would love to see something like this revolutionize the way people communicate, but I would be fearful of governments that may play man in the middle.
So, who will launch and then maintain the satellites, install and operate ground uplink stations, fix your 'lantern' when it suddenly goes dark, and so on?
That stuff does not come 'free'.
