A lot of software is free and much, maybe most, is good enough for most people. However, though, people need to make a living. In this case, should developers be encouraged to go into other lines of work or should they 2nd guess this world where so much stuff is free?

No one lives off of free, either they have a good backer or they are getting donations or have something going that is paid.
