Brominated vegetable oil, a synthetic chemical that has been patented in Europe as a flame retardant, will no longer double as an ingredient in Gatorade sports drinks.

Molly Carter, a spokeswoman for Gatorade owner PepsiCo Inc., said the company has been considering the move for more than a year, working on a way to take out the ingredient without affecting the flavor of the drink.

Not sure how the FDA allowed this to be an ingredient to begin with. I do know, however, that I tried gatorade once and it was disgusting!

It's worth noting though, that they're only removing it from Gatorade. The same additive is used in Mountain Dew, a drink by the same company. Additionally it's used in Fanta, Fresca, Squirt, and Sunkist soda.

However, their reasoning for why it has taken so long to remove it is nothing more than a lie. BVO is illegal to use in food/drink in Europe, but we still have Gatorade, Mt. Dew etc. so they could have easily substituted it long ago.
