New York State is launching a campaign to collect coordinated data on residents’ sexual orientation as part of a comprehensive effort to improve health and human services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender New Yorkers, the state’s health department announced Wednesday.

It would be the first such statewide effort in the country, Dan O’Connell, director of the state Health Department’s AIDS Institute, said in an interview with Capital.

Eight state agencies will soon begin collecting the self-reported, voluntary data on LGBT people who use their services. The agencies are: the Department of Health, Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Office for the Aging, Office of Mental Health, Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services, Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Office of Children and Family Services and Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

The agencies will ask people using their public services to self-report their sexual orientation on forms, along with other identifying data state agencies typically collect.

My thought is:

"Whatever I am, it's none of the Government's damned business."

Anybody agree with me?

A 2011 Institute of Medicine report showed that limited data collection on health issues specific to the LGBT community had made it more difficult to identify disparities in the kinds of care available to them.

If that data was available, the state could develop better ways of addressing health problems like H.I.V./AIDS and certain types of cancers prevalent among gay men.

For example, O’Connell said, “70 percent of all new [H.I.V.] infections are among men who have sex with men. We need to be able to track this population.”

Sounds more to me that they want to identify these people to charge them exorbitant medical premiums and/or deny them medical treatment for preexisting conditions.

Eight state agencies will soon begin collecting the self-reported, voluntary data on LGBT people who use their services.

If I were a member of the LGBT community, I would follow the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that restricts U.S. military from obtaining the same information NY State now wants.

track and then what? kill them?

i disagree with this 100%, the United States government and especially New York City is being radical and unthinkable in their reasons and logic to force tyranny.

It doesn't quite open up to me what sexual orientation has to do with getting treatment from a doctor when you're sick (be it hiv, cancer or a migraine)...then again I know the health care system is different from ours that's available for everyone with only three less than 15e bills a year, nurse is completely free for that matter, that is covered by social services (includes additional dental bills, doctors payments and hospital stays, etc. which fall all in the 15-30e range per visit/day, procedures themselves can be more expensive) unless you have a job and afford to pay those bills yourself by their standards.

I could understand anonymous survey but identifying information included makes it sound like a roundup for later purposes that might not be with the best intentions (especially because it's the states).

(Then again my medical files obviously record my gender identity and probably speculates my orientation by medical personel that continuously record things wrong latest being me suddenly having a big sister and a common mistake that my hrt made me gain weight which it has never caused, one document stating I discontinued testosterone to control weight, which never happened >.>

This will come in real handy for the socialist republic of New York when the rationing begins. Well the leftists in New York wanted no self responsibility for themselves and everything taken care of by big brother. They are going to get a big full dose of it before long on just how murderous that kind of government is. Enjoy! You deserve it!

And you wait when people do not volunteer that info thats when the government of New York steps it up with threats of no treatment because they need that info to first "help you" of course before we can treat you. These silly people thinking government really wants to help you. They will just add sexual orientation right below your political affiliation. This is just a list on who gets priority of care first to last.
