Gender Specific Roles?

How do you feel about these? A few examples would be education, profession, housework, etc.



When you hear a man is a stay at home dad, how do you feel? Do you feel the man should make more money? Do you think a man should get gifts for the woman such as flowers/chocolates/etc, but not vise versa? Decision making? Should EVERYTHING be an equal say between a man/woman?



I would like to believe I'm not bias either way, but I'll discuss when a few other people do.

I remember growing up were that jobs like teachers, flight attendants, or nurses were only held by females. For some reason I had always thought women were more considerate, compassionate, etc so that's why they were so good in those roles. To be any of those jobs I listed you obviously need to be a compassionate and patient kind of person.



Today it's antiquated to still think in gender-specific roles. It's considered sexist now to say for example fireman instead of firefighter or mankind instead of humankind. We are even close to having First Man in the White House soon enough.



In terms of relationships I think equality starts with independence. Independence though has a lot to do with how much education and how many opportunities are available to the woman. Back when my mother was growing up women were stuck. They married young and had kids young. There were few opportunities.



Not anymore. As you said there are fathers that stay at home and do child-rearing/housework while their wives further their education and work several jobs. If you look at your colleges, universities, workplaces - you will find more women than men.

Anyone who thinks of themselves as unbiased is naive. Subconsciously we are constantly processing the world around us and how we fit into this world.



What about double standards?



If a woman hurts an abusive husband it will surely receive different attention than if a man hurts and abusive wife.

If you saw a pretty girl on the street you would say things you wouldn't dare say to your mother or sister. And that pretty girl is someone's mother or someone's sister.



There tends to be a group of unreasonable people for every noble movement who will take things too far. Someone who will take a movement for equality to one for domination. For the feminist movement there was Feminazis. For all the struggle of the civil rights movement there was the Black Panther Party and the NBPP.

I cannot speak for the rest of society.



I cannot personally address incidents that occurred years before I was born.



I cannot judge what motivates others to do or act a certain way in a certain situation.



I cannot stop them from doing what they are going to do either.



I cannot be held responsible for the words or actions of any adult other than myself.



All I can do is what I can do.



However, I was raised and do believe and agree with the statement that one should treat a woman as a 'Lady' until she proves that she isn't.



I made the conscious decision to take others at face value until they demonstrate they should be seen as something different.



I make a point to not hold prejudice against any given class or group of people but take each person on their own merits, or lack thereof, on a case by case basis.



If that isn't good enough for those around who seek 'restitution' for wrongs from ages past against people long since passed on to be given to those who do not seek to better themselves but to only bring others down to their levels, then I am sorry, but I cannot help you.
