A Japanese restaurateur pays a record breaking ã472,038 (56.49 million Yen) for a 593 lb bluefin tuna at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market.
The tuna was caught off northeast Japan's Aomori Prefecture and beat last year's record when 32.5 million Yen was paid for a larger fish, which weighed in at 754 lbs.
The auction, the first of the year is traditionally a time for over the top bids on the choicest tuna.
The winning bid by Kiyoshi Kimura, who operates the Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain said he was determined to outbid foreign buyers who had beaten him in recent years.
He said the fish would be a gift to the Japanese people for all the hardships they had endured in 2011, not least the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster, as well as the general economic malaise that is affecting the country.
