An 11-year-old suburban girl charged with murder in the beating death of a 2-month-old who was staying overnight with her and her mother expressed no remorse over the infant's death, police said.

The 11-year-old, her mother and the baby girl, Zuri Whitehead, were on a couch downstairs when the mother fell asleep at about 3 a.m. Friday, Wickliffe police Chief Randy Ice said at a news conference Monday. The mother was awakened less than an hour later by her daughter, who was holding the badly injured infant. Ice said the 11-year-old took the infant upstairs. When she returned downstairs, the infant was bleeding and her head was badly swollen, he said.

The 11-year-old's mother immediately called 911, Ice said. Zuri was flown to a children's trauma center in Cleveland, where she died.

Ice said the girl did not show any remorse. "I'm not sure she appreciated the gravity of what she did," he said.

Juvenile Judge Karen Lawson entered a not guilty plea for the girl at a detention hearing on Monday and ordered that she undergo a competency hearing.

The police chief said the mother of the 11-year-old and Zuri's mother, Trina Whitehead, have known each other for five or six years but aren't related. Trina Whitehead has three other children and had the girl's mother keep Zuri, of Cleveland, overnight to give her a breather.

The Associated Press is not naming the 11-year-old girl or her mother because of her age.

Neither Ice nor a Lake County juvenile court official could recall a murder suspect being that young. Court administrator Chris Simon said 13 is the youngest age that children are typically detained at the county's juvenile detention center, where the girl is being held.

The girl cannot be tried as an adult. A child must be at least 14 years old in Ohio to be turned over to adult court.

What do you think should happen to this 11 year old girl?

Rehabilitation.

Various stages in adolescence vastly differ from that of an adult. Something bad must have happened to this little girl to make her do such a thing, but there was more information about her saying there were previous problems so this is not the first time she's had issues. It is absolutely terrible that this happened, but what has to happen here is getting that girl some serious help.

Lock her up in a nut house until she's an old lady.

Put her out of her misery before she becomes a more evil adult version of what she is now.

More information:
The mother of a 2-month-old who police suspect was beaten to death over the weekend by a friend's 11-year-old daughter said Tuesday it was the girl who asked that the baby stay overnight with her and her mother.

Trina Whitehead, 31, of Cleveland, told The Associated Press that she and the girl's mother were best friends and that she never saw anything in the girl's behavior that concerned her.

Whitehead said the 11-year-old's mother called her around 9:30 p.m. Thursday and said they were close by and that they wanted to keep Zuri overnight. The girl and her mother thought Whitehead deserved a break from caring for the infant. Whitehead said she almost declined the offer because it was so late and she was not prepared, but she relented when they insisted.

Maybe it's just how poorly the article is written, but it's very strange too. You ask at 9:30 at night if you can relieve your friend of her baby, then (apparently) you leave it in the hands of your 11 year old during the night? And the 11 year old wanted a sleepover...with a baby? For what? I also personally wouldn't let my 2 month old sleep over with anyone, period, but the request itself is just very peculiar. Could be the mother killed the baby and is using the 11 year old as a scapegoat.
