A four-year-old girl has been found dead, and her mother with serious slash wounds to her wrists, at a house in Greater Manchester.
Officers were called to Lea Mount Drive, Bury, at about 1840 GMT on Thursday after concerns were raised about the child's welfare.
They discovered Chloe Burke in a bedroom and began a murder inquiry.
Her mother Dawn Makin was found unconscious beside her. She is in a critical condition in hospital.
Police have refused to disclose the nature of Chloe's injuries. A post-mortem investigation is due to be carried out later.
'World fallen apart'
Earlier, Chloe's father Michael and step-brother Nathan went to the house to lay flowers.

Chloe's father spoke briefly of his shock, saying his world had fallen apart.
He said his daughter was a bubbly four-year-old.
Ms Makin's friend, Melissa Todd, described her as the life and soul of a party, who always picks everybody else up.
Ch Supt Jon Rush, Greater Manchester Police's divisional commander for Bury, said: This is an absolutely devastating time for the family of Chloe and her mother and, while we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this, it is important that we find out for them exactly what happened.
A team of detectives is working to find out what led up to this tragedy and specially trained officers are working closely with the family.
