Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced he intends to resign as leader of the Labour Party.
Speaking outside Downing Street at 5.00pm today, Mr Brown said that he intends to set in motion the process to select a new leader, to be chosen at the Labour Party conference in the autumn.
He also said that the Labour Party was also about to begin serious negotiations with the Liberal Democrats about a deal to form the next government.
The prime minister's announcement came towards the end of a dramatic day in British politics, which saw negotiations between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats continue for a fourth day amid expectations that both parties were close to agreeing a deal over the formation of the next government.
