The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. It began in England during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to diversify. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from the 19th century.

The goth subculture has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion. The music of the Goth subculture encompasses a number of different styles including Gothic rock, Deathrock, post-punk, darkwave, Ethereal, and Neoclassical. Styles of dress within the subculture range fromdeathrock, punk and Victorian style attire, or combinations of the above, most often with dark attire, makeup and hair.

Are you goth?

If so, would you say most people react to your appearance in a positive or negative way?

What would you like to say to people who react negative based on your appearance?

How long have you been goth and how did you decide on this subculture?

For those who are not goth:

How would you react seeing a person dressed in their goth attire?

If you were an employer, would you hire a goth?

I'm not a goth, but I do find most women who dress in goth clothing to be attractive. A fan of the odd things I suppose.

As far as if I were an employer, as long as someone looks decent it shouldn't matter how they style themselves. People are all made of the same meaty inner bits, and I care much more about things like responsibly and willingness to work.

I'm not exactly goth. I do enjoy wearing black, and I do get misclassified as goth quite a lot. If I were an employer, the only things that would sway my opinion of potential employees would be the way they carry themselves, and in some cases their appearance. For example, it's highly likely that I would pass over someone covered in facial piercings/facial tattoos if the job requires a large amount of face-to-face customer interaction. Their dress sense alone wouldn't change my opinion because for the most part I assume there would be a company uniform, so what they wear wouldn't be an issue.

Well...I like black clothing and dark music but otherwise I don't see why that would count as Goth.

Pretty much this.

I've never really called myself a goth but have been called it many times. Amongst other things - mainly to do with the devil. Once got shouted at by some people walking down the road it's not halloween yet effing this effing that.

I do wear alot of black but when I dress gothic it is in colourful crush velvet dresses. I love that kind of gothic look. I also have a couple of gothic coats - one velvet and 2 lace.

Not really much going on these days were I can wear the dresses which is sad.

I know quite alot of people who dress in the gothic style being amongst pagan/witchcraft circles. Nicest people you could meet.

Not a Goth, doesn't mean I care what they wear. Some of those things are pretty cool.

As for hiring them, as long as they dress appropriately for the job, I don't see any reason to disqualify them from the job.

Frankly, I think if the Goth can do the job. Then I don't see the problem with hiring them. Yeah there might be a dress code though. But well, yeah. Also, a good deal of my shirts are black. Not cause I consider myself Goth, just that I like the color.
