Government funding for NASA

I heard that NASA actually makes money for the country. I dont know how that is possible and its probably a rumor.
Anyway I suppose our priorities right now are getting the economy back on its feet, not spending billions of dollars researching a planet a couple planents over or whatever they do. We do need to have people working in that department though as we need to know if a asteroid, comet or meteor is about to smack into us or not.
