I hate when people say that. It's like telling them they'll have a child eventually, and that they're crazy to say they never, ever will. Some people just don't want it. *shrug*

If I could offer some advice...
(No, you don't have to take it, I am just "offering" it
)Do not shut yourself completely off of the possibility of someone out there for you. I am not saying to look for it, and I am not saying go out and actively search for someone, just the opposite, do not do that. What I am saying is just do not completely shut yourself off from that possibility, from that part of the world.
And what I really wanted to say is, with the exception of that, you appear to have the right idea. You are thinking correctly, and getting some great advice from the people here.
The absolute first thing you need to do is heal yourself, and it sounds like you have already figured that out. And I am sure you are aware, it's going to be a slow process, will not happen overnight. I think a cat would help you there.
Treat them with respect, show them love and patience, and you are going to be amazed at what you get in return.
I recommend you try it, well worth your time and I think it really will help.
I have been using animals for therapy for over 10 years now. I started out with dogs, but they have since passed away. I now have two cats, my first cats ever, been around dogs all my life. (and don't ask me how that happened, it just did..."somehow"
)Anyway, I recommend a cat because (and I speak from experience here) cats are waaaaay less maintenance than a dog, but will basically return the same result.
And if you do get a cat...

They shouldn't be allowed to roam if people want animals they need to be diligent
because it's not my bloody job to clean up after other peoples wants and needs.
