A Gloucester Old Spot will be named Super Sad True Love Story, after Gary Shteyngart's novel was announced as the winner of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic fiction.

A Gloucester Old Spot pig will be named Super Sad True Love Story in honour of the winning novel of the Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction.

Gary Shteyngart’s novel, his third, was picked as the twelfth winner of the prize over other titles in the shortlist, including The News Where You Are by Catherine O'Flynn and Comfort and Joy by India Knight.

The Old Spot will join a host of others named after previous winners such as Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (Paul Torday), Vernon God Little (DBC Pierre White) and The Butt (Will Self).

The American author will be presented with the award on June 4 at the Telegraph Hay Festival.

It is the first time an American writer has won the award and as well as having a pig named after his novel Shteyngart will also be presented with a jeroboam of Bollinger Special Cuvee, a case of Bollinger La Grand Annee and a set of the Everyman Wodehouse collection.

Peter Florence, judge and director of the Hay Festival, said: “Gary Shteyngart’s writing is thrilling. He’s a staggeringly clever satirist who manages to create worlds and people of perfect coherence and outrageous misfortune. This is great literature and it’s wild comedy.”

Set in America in the near-future, Super Sad True Love Story follows a love story among “a crumbling police state, at war with Venezuela, its national debt so bad that the Chinese are threatening to pull the plug” — according to Telegraph writer Tom Shone who interviewed Shteyngart last year.

The prize was established in 2000 in honour of British humorist PG Wodehouse, who became a US citizen in 1955.

Last year Ian McEwan won the prize for his novel Solar.
