To me, that's someone who reveals who they are in a bad situation and helps. For example, even though I'm not too fond of the song, I found it very brave of Macklemore releasing "Same Love" as a single, considering how homophobic the rap industry can be at times. 
Basically the song is about how he doesn't like how people hate gays and how he's for gay rights, the song just seems a bit too preachy to me.
