Over 40,000 jobs would be generated by the controversial plan, which will link London and Birmingham, according to Department for Transport documents due to be published next week alongside the Governmentââ¬â¢s consultation on the project.
Around 9,000 people would be employed on the construction of the 250 mph railway and there will be a further 1,500 jobs involved in its operation, it suggests.
Regeneration of areas around the stations would create 30,000 jobs.
The ã17bn project is controversial because the new line will pass through unspoiled countryside Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, including the Chilterns. The scheme is deeply unpopular among residents and there have been several demonstrations.
Local Conservative associations have withheld funds from the central party and threatened political consequences for MPs with seats along the route including the Welsh secretary, Cheryl Gillan.
All three main parties support the new rail link.
