Google Maps delivers a Hobbit-related joke to users who ask for walking directions from the Shire to Mordor, in another recently-unearthed Google 'easter egg'.

Asking Google Maps for walking directions from the Shire, where the Hobbits live in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, to Mordor, home of the evil Sauron, brings back the warning: Use caution - One does not simply walk into Mordor.

The line, spoken by Boromir in The Lord of the Rings, became an internet 'meme' a few years ago, with jokers editing pictures to provide their own twist.

Google's websites are well known for containing 'Easter eggs' - jokes added by software engineers for their own amusement or to surprise users.

Earlier this week, Google users discovered that typing let it snow into the search engine caused snowflakes to fall from the top of the screen until the browser is covered. A 'defrost' button returns things to normal.

Google's jokes frequently play on internet memes or reference parts of technology history. Another recent Easter egg caused the screen to spin 360-degrees when the user typed do a barrel roll - a reference to the 1997 video game Star Fox 64.

t is not clear how long the Mordor Easter egg has been around but its emergence ties in with the launch of the trailer for the new film adaptation of The Hobbit, which will be released next year.
