How did you buy your game consoles and games when young?

So when you were a kid/teenager, how'd you get your gaming consoles and/or video games? For me it was rare to get video games outside of the holidays and possibly my birthday.

So how about you? Any experiences or memories?

I had a part-time job delivering circulars, the pay was pretty bad. But it was enough for me to get a PS2, Turok: Evolution, This is Football 2002, a second controller, and a memory card. I didn't buy games all that often, especially as I got the PS2 on hire purchase. That ate my monies for a year or two. Can't quite remember as it was over 20 years ago now. I do remember also buying Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy Anthology which came with IV and V. It was really rare for me to get games though. It usually equaled out to one or two games a year.

I would trade or save up my pocket money/allowance until I could afford things. We used to have a Funcoland beside us and they'd have these newspapers they'd give out that listed every game and their price, I'd go through it with a highlighter looking at whatever consoles we owned at the time and highlight the cheap games, then go and see if they had them, lol. Managed to get a decent collection that way, and started a lifelong obsession!

I only got new consoles and handhelds on my birthday and Christmas and it wasn't often. Most of my consoles I have now I bought when I was older. I would trade in games to get new ones as well, every once in a while. I do regret trading in Legend of Dragoon...

Ouch, yeah, that's a hard one to get back! I was a fool as a child and traded in my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Huge mistake, cost me a fortune when I was older to get it back!

Yeep, same. I hardly got games throughout the year and had to wait for my birthday or Christmas.

I was lucky enough to have kind parents.
They sacrificed to ensure I had whatever fancy console and games I wanted, within reason.

Eventually, once I could legally work, I spent my own money from about 13 onwards.
