cPanel is the biggest factor I look for as all the alternatives are... well I disliked them all. Of course, that comes after ensuring that they offer all the specs and services I need. I also look for providers that allow me to manage multiple services in one account and keep each one a separate billing plan.
Well I would read a lot of reviews, especially on webmaster and webhosting type forums. I've had my VPS with my host now for well over a decade.
